Question

What exactly does Kurma mean ?

Sonia Grover (age 14), Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi, India

AnswerKurma is the name of one of the 10 avataras (incarnations) of Vishnu. Kurma was the tortoise avatara. The story of Lord Tortoise is described in India's classic Sanskrit text Kurma Purana, and also in the Bhagavata Purana, also known as Srimad Bhagavatam. My name is Kurma Dasa which means servant of Lord Kurma, or in other words, servant of Vishnu, or Krishna. The name was given to me in 1971 at the time of my spiritual initiation by the Founder Acharya of the Hare Krishna movement, Srila Prabhupada. For more on that story, click here.
